UK USED BUYING GUIDE

LAND ROVER
DEFENDER.

The original Defender spans twenty-six years, five main diesel eras, three wheelbases, dozens of working bodies and an enormous conversion market. Buy the identity and structure first, then the exact powertrain.

This quick guide highlights the major risks. Build the detailed guide to remove checks that do not apply to the exact vehicle you are viewing.

THE DEFENDER CHECKS THAT DECIDE THE PURCHASE

THE BADGE IS THE LEAST RELIABLE SPECIFICATION GUIDE

Replacement chassis, later doors, engine swaps, different axles and upgraded interiors are routine. Match the stamped identity and V5C to wheelbase, body and period hardware, then record every conversion separately.

01
CHASSIS / BULKHEAD

Inspect inside rails and behind hinges

Borescope chassis rails and probe outriggers, mounts and crossmembers. Inspect footwells, A-pillars, vent corners and bulkhead top rail. Fresh underseal and chequer plate can conceal the largest bills.

02
200Tdi / 300Tdi

Timing-belt detail differs by engine

On a 200Tdi inspect tracking and injection timing. A 300Tdi needs evidence of the corrected belt-alignment hardware as well as routine service. Both require cooling, boost, breathing and head-gasket checks.

03
Td5

Check the head, injector system and oil-pump bolt

Look for combustion leakage and fuel in oil, inspect injector-harness oil migration, scan cylinder balance and demand evidence that the oil-pump sprocket bolt was secured correctly.

04
PUMA

Injector sealing and MT82 output condition matter

Inspect for injector-seat carbon, test rail corrections and turbo control, then check the six-speed output/adapter splines. The 2.2 adds DPF and regeneration scrutiny.

05
GEARBOX / LT230

Match LT77, R380, MT82 or rare ZF to its failure pattern

Test every ratio cold and hot, inspect output/input spline wear, then engage LT230 high/low and centre-differential lock on suitable ground.

06
AXLES / STEERING

Trace clonk and play through the complete system

Swivels, CVs, hubs, flanges, differentials, propshafts, steering box, rods and panhard bushes accumulate wear. Replacing the loudest part rarely cures all of it.

07
ABS / SECURITY

Missing warning lamps and immobiliser bypasses are warnings

Scan ABS/traction control where fitted and test every key/fob. Alarm bypasses, damaged columns and inconsistent identity deserve theft and wiring scrutiny.

08
CONVERSIONS

A desirable engine swap still needs engineering and paperwork

Audit mounts, cooling, gearing, brakes, axles, wiring, emissions, V5C and insurance. A powerful engine attached to weak gearing or an unknown chassis is not an upgrade.

Research status

UK Defender generator reviewed 3 August 2026. Fifteen factory combinations and thirty-nine detailed conditional checks cover 90/110/130 body, powertrain, suspension, use and conversion state.
