THE L663 CHECKS THAT DECIDE THE PURCHASE
A 90 coil-spring diesel, 110 PHEV, 130 V8 and 110 OCTA share a shape but little diagnostic risk. Use VIN model year, factory build and physical hardware together; the generator removes checks that do not apply.
Scan every module before and after driving
The vehicle depends on networked powertrain, chassis, restraint, security and infotainment modules. Save faults and software levels before a cold road test, then repeat after low-range, suspension and assistance functions have operated. Recently cleared codes are evidence, not reassurance.
Match the test to the exact engine
Early 2.0 diesels need oil-dilution, timing, DPF and EGR scrutiny. Straight-six MHEVs add 48V hardware and complex aftertreatment or electric supercharging. The 5.0 V8 needs cooling and timing inspection; OCTA adds a different 4.4 twin-turbo V8.
A charge indicator is not a battery-health report
Read battery state of health and cell deviation, charge from a low state and test EV, blended and petrol-only operation. Inspect the underfloor enclosure and thermal circuits. The earlier P400e and later P300e use different petrol engines.
Coils, air and 6D Dynamics require different tests
Coils need geometry and bush inspection. Air suspension must stand overnight and complete every height without excessive compressor work. OCTA’s hydraulic-interlinked 6D Dynamics needs pressure, leak, mode and specialist diagnostic checks.
Prove low range and the differentials on suitable ground
Command the twin-speed transfer case and monitor centre-differential data. Where an active rear differential is fitted, prove its clutch response rather than relying on the terrain display. Correct matched tyres are essential before diagnosing wind-up or judder.
Inspect bonded aluminium structure and concealed water paths
Check castings, seams, subframe mounts and underbody protection for impact or non-approved repair. Lift cabin and load-floor trim for roof, door and tailgate leakage; wet connectors can create intermittent faults long after the carpet is dried.
Cold-boot every screen, camera and assistance function
Test Pivi after sleep, OTA status, telematics, ClearSight, surround cameras and all driver aids. Replacement glass, suspension work or accident repair needs correct camera/radar calibration after geometry is proven.
Seat count and Hard Top identity are not cosmetic details
Verify every restraint on 5+1, seven- and eight-seat vehicles. Hard Tops need correct commercial identity and load-history checks. Audit every key, current security software, tracker transfer and any recovered-theft or module-replacement history.
UK Defender L663 generator reviewed 3 August 2026. Fifteen factory powertrain groups and thirty-three detailed conditional checks cover body/seating, engine, gearbox/transfer system, suspension, use and modification state.
