THE L320 CHECKS THAT CHANGE THE BUYING DECISION
The facelift brings the 3.0 diesel and 5.0 supercharged petrol. For 2012, 3.0 diesels gain the eight-speed and rotary selector; the 5.0 supercharged remains six-speed. Confirm VIN model year and fitted hardware.
Demand proof of both belts and identify the oil-pump work
“Timing belt done” is not enough. The front cam belt and rear fuel-pump belt need evidence, and the invoice should show what was done around the oil-pump housing and tensioner.
Belt history does not clear crankshaft risk
Verify both belts, then separately assess oil intervals, hot bottom-end noise, oil/filter debris, sequential turbo operation, DPF regeneration and dilution clues.
Inspect two turbo systems bank by bank
Access-heavy turbo and oil-drain faults can be expensive. Compare boost and airflow between banks and inspect for smoke, leakage and heat damage after a loaded drive.
Cold-start timing noise and hidden cooling leaks matter
Read cam correlation, inspect crossover pipes and the valley, test the water pump and prove the separate charge-cooling circuit under sustained load.
Test the fitted ZF unit cold and fully hot
Six-speed cars need careful engagement, sleeve, sump and converter checks. Eight-speed diesel cars add rotary-selector operation. A fluid change cannot repair established internal wear.
Measure it before the vehicle wakes up
An overnight corner-height test exposes leaks hidden by automatic levelling. Cycle every height and assess compressor fill time before blaming the compressor.
Do not confuse active anti-roll faults with air suspension
Where fitted, inspect hydraulic pipes, valve block and actuators, scan the system and road-test its roll response. It is a separate system with a separate repair bill.
Inspect sills, subframes and mounts underneath
The L320 is not an aluminium monocoque like later Range Rovers. Check its integrated body-frame, seams, jacking points, suspension mounts and subframes for corrosion and poor repair.
UK L320 generator reviewed 2 August 2026. Seven engine variants, nine year-specific factory configurations and 38 detailed checks are live with dated UK cost bands.
